Hello, I am Keonwoo Kwon, CEO of WeDataLab.

More than twenty years ago, while working on a next-generation system project in the financial sector, I became deeply curious about the internal structure of DBMS technology.

In truth, this book began at that moment. One day during the project I asked Geunoh Lee, “Could we slow a DBMS down and examine every corner of it, almost like an MRI in a hospital?” It sounded like a casual question, but a few days later he told me it might actually be possible. That was the beginning of our journey.

The work started at a very basic level and gradually became more sophisticated. Even with demanding day jobs, we spent nights after work in a 24-hour café in Jongno analyzing DUMP logs to solve Oracle problems no one else had solved. The joy we felt when we finally found an answer years later is difficult to describe.

Through that process I encountered a depth of Oracle I had never expected and came to understand, at least in part, the difficult decisions considered by Bob Miner, one of Oracle’s creators.

Spending nights with my co-authors investigating the internal behavior of three representative DBMS platforms was deeply rewarding. We could not simply ask someone else, and the answers were not available online. At first, directly discovering and comparing those principles felt reckless, but persistent research allowed us to solve them one by one. Watching the younger researchers who joined us grow beyond expectations was equally meaningful.

I am also deeply grateful to the colleagues who continued solving countless problems and surprising their seniors long after the original journey ended.

WeDataLab now builds on this experience and research to provide data-driven solutions and help organizations establish the right strategy for using their data. We will continue sharing knowledge accumulated through research and enterprise projects, and build a data-centered future together.

Hello, I am Seungwoo Kang, Executive Vice President of WeDataLab.

Growing up under the warm sun of Jeju gave me a close sense of nature and people. When I moved to Seoul to study physics, I once dreamed of winning a Nobel Prize. But I was drawn to the freedom and innovation of the IT world and eventually chose a career in computing.

My professional journey began at Penta. I later worked at global technology companies including BEA and Oracle, where I handled core platforms such as Tuxedo and WebLogic and focused on solving complex enterprise IT problems.

Successfully applying global software in Korea became both a source of pride and a reason to keep challenging myself. Today at WeDataLab, I devote my energy to innovative machine-learning solutions and to the future of Korean software that can communicate and compete globally.

On weekends I lecture at Namsan Library, trying to share the deeper knowledge and insight needed to understand the essence of artificial intelligence. I will continue contributing to the IT industry through sustained research and new challenges, and I look forward to building an innovative future together. Thank you.

Hello, I am Geunoh Lee, Head of Consulting at WeDataLab.

I was born and raised in Pohang, always carrying a strong sense of challenge and curiosity. After studying computer science in Seoul, I began my career as an Oracle DBA in telecommunications. I later worked as a DBA across numerous next-generation financial projects, solving complex DBMS problems that were difficult even at a global level. Those experiences gave me pride in contributing to Oracle’s role as a core technology in financial systems.

My research journey took a new turn in 2006 when I met CEO Keonwoo Kwon on the Samsung Card next-generation system project. From then on I began an intensive study of DBMS internals. The work eventually led to our co-authored book, Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL Core Architecture, in which we sought to explain some of the deepest concepts in database technology.

Today I continue studying DBMS internals with younger engineers and apply that work to Korean software capable of competing globally. On weekends you may find me tending a garden near Bukhansan, or sharing my experience through comparative lectures on DBMS core architecture whenever time allows.

I will continue pursuing research and new challenges that create innovation in IT. I look forward to building the future together. Thank you.
